Women to Watch - Class of 2009

Women to Watch - Class of 2009
Now in our fourth year of producing this annual feature, we remain in awe of the number of incredible women working on a local, national and international basis to ensure healthcare is delivered in a thoughtful, safe, compassionate and effective manner.

This year’s honorees are all outcome-driven –– whether that be providing evidence-based care to patients, offering the best education to future healthcare professionals, helping clients safely traverse the industry’s complex regulatory morass, vocalizing for those who are often unheard, taking the pulse of the nation, or serving as chief flag bearer for the city’s healthcare companies.

Although it is always difficult to narrow down the long list of nominees, the very process reminds us of Nashville’s unique position as a true healthcare capital. With that entrepreneurial spirit, comes the willingness to look at ongoing issues from a different perspective … more and more often, a woman’s perspective.

One of this year’s honorees –– Beth Price, CEO of Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center –– wryly observed, “There is no question women have made tremendous advances, and opportunities for us in leadership roles are so much greater than in years past. However, we still face the Ginger Rogers cliché … she did everything Fred Astaire did but backwards and in heels.”

With significant support systems in place, these passionate women bring zeal to the daily dance … whether it’s carrying out the responsibilities of their demanding day jobs or unwinding during off-hour pursuits. Enjoying family, friends, travel and a few adventurous hobbies clearly help these women recharge their batteries and bring renewed energies to their work. The beneficiaries are the thousands and thousands of lives that are touched and forever changed by the caring professionals who make up the Women to Watch Class of 2009.
